What Can This Reformed Tennis Bum Teach You About Marketing Your Business?

deborah with hoover the wonder houndReformed tennis bum. Project manager. Science and science fiction geek. Fortune 50 leader. World traveler. Web marketing strategist. Animal lover, especially American English Coon Hounds. Business owner. Reader of trashy romance, sci-fi, mysteries and action adventure.

There you have it – the “cloud” version of who I am. But why in the world should you come to me for advice? Am I someone you can trust to help you grow your business?

Would it help to know that I come from a family of entrepreneurs and that I picked out the name of my first business while I was still a college student? That was a while back but even then I knew I wanted to have my own business and work for myself. Since then I’ve been on an odyssey away from and back to that vision.

As an aspiring journalist I worked as the managing editor of a peer-reviewed technical journal. That lead to my own desktop publishing business, which was moderately successful for a number of years but that ultimately failed as the technology became easier to use, widely available and relatively inexpensive.

The next fork in the road sent me in an entirely different direction. I was a manufacturing supervisor for a Fortune 50 company and gradually positioned myself as a project manager and then into an Internet marketing role.

I thought I’d found my niche. My inner entrepreneur enjoyed working for the small and nimble business group located far, far away from the center of the corporate universe. I really loved what I was doing.

And then ….

Laid Off – Not Once But Twice!

My 10-year stint with the Fortune 50 company ended when the layoff ax finally took its turn with me and I found myself unemployed for the first time ever. I spent a year looking for the next great job, and found one with a smaller company that I enjoyed quite a bit. I traveled all over the world, saw airports, offices, and hotels in some pretty exotic locations, and – 16 months later – found myself laid off once again.

And all I had to show for it was a whole bunch of frequent flyer miles and regrets that I had been unable to really see and experience all the fantastic places I had visited.

What Does Any Of This Have To Do With Your Business?

Good question.

For starters I want you to see that I have the professional chops to be able to help you. And by that I don’t just mean Internet marketing experience. I mean a breadth and depth of professional experience that gives me a keen and unique insight into any business in any industry in any part of the world … even YOUR business.

It also means I have some “life experience” under my belt. I’ve been around the block a few times, seen a few things. I’ve worked for small businesses and mega-corporations, non-profits and sole proprieterships, managed teams in every corner of the globe and travelled in person to all those corners. I’ve walked in a lot of different shoes during the course of my career.

I like to think that not much surprises me anymore but that I also haven’t lost my ability to be amazed.

But you know what? Your best barometer for reading my ability to help your business is so simple ….
